Title of the PhD project:
Energy storage devices: development and characterisation of components of new materials for batteries and supercapacitors aimed at solving safety and sustainability issues.

Abstract of the PhD project:
The use of lithium iron phosphate (LiFeO4, LFP) batteries, which already provide a significant reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions, may further promote the clean energy transition for road transport, enabling a higher uptake of renewable energy technologies. Among the several electrochemical technologies available today, batteries and supercapacitors are dominating the energy storage field. The aim of this project is mainly focused on three aspects: i) the study of LFP safety issues under normal/regular conditions, as a result of highly-controlled abuse; ii) the study of new materials for energy storage devices, with a focus on the development of new materials for electrode components; iii) the development of a Life Cycle Assessment to estimate the potential impacts of batteries on the environment and human health, from raw material acquisition to the waste management.
