Thermochemical conversion of biomass and catalytic upgrading of its derivatives into added-value bio-products
Abstract of the PhD project
My PhD project is focused on the valorization of biomass as an alternative feedstock for producing renewable fuels and chemicals. The thermochemical conversion of biomass, with particular attention to hydrothermal and pyrolysis technologies, is receiving great attention, to produce biochar, bio-oil, and bio-gas as target streams. In my PhD project, hydrothermal and pyrolysis routes will be investigated, developing the thermocatalytic conversion of waste biomasses into valuable products. In this context, the use of zeolites as catalysts will be specifically considered for the pyrolysis, to properly tune the selectivity parameter. Regarding the catalytic upgrading of biomass derivatives, the hydrogenation of furanic compounds into added-value products will be studied, by developing mono- and bi-functional hydrogenation catalysts, and further tuning the acid-base properties of the support to optimize the selectivity to the target product(s).
