Congratulations to our PhD student Marco Bazi for the recent scientific publication entitled "Rare-Earth Salicylate Phenanthroline Complexes Cause Cell Death in Human Tumor Cells". Rare-Earth mononuclear complexes can express a relevant antiproliferative effect against human ovarian carcinoma cell lines. Rare-Earth N,N-dibutylcarbamate [RE(O2CNBu2)3] was reacted with salicylaldehyde as protic reactant and phenanthroline as neutral ancillary ligand.
The reaction afforded in high yield [RE(sal)3(phen)] as a single product with no byproducts. Spectroscopycal data (IR and NMR) are in good agreement with the proposed structure, confirmed further through XRD studies on [Y(sal)3(phen)]. These complexes demostrated interesting antiproliferative properties, especially on human ovarian carcinoma cells. In particular, [Dy(sal)3(phen)] appears the most interesting for its ability to overcome resistance phenomenon and to induce a significant increase in ROS production.
