Congratulations to our PhD student Carlo Marotta for the publication of a book chapter entitled “Exploiting the Chemical Diversity of Metal Compounds as a Source of Novel Anti-COVID-19 Drugs”. This chapter is part of the 24th volume of the series Metal Ions in Life Sciences (MILS), which is entitled “Targeted Metallo-Drugs: Design, Development, and Modes of Action”. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the scientific community has been extensively researching new antiviral agents that could be used for the treatment of this disease.
In this frame, medicinal inorganic chemistry, with its vast arsenal of compounds, has also made an effort to discover new drug candidates. In this chapter, some interesting gold and bismuth compounds which demonstrated promising antiviral activity are discussed. Furthermore, a rational strategy for the identification of new antiviral compounds in libraries of molecules has been taken into account. All in all, the purpose of this chapter consists in explaining how inorganic chemistry can contribute to the discovery of new potential antiviral compounds for the treatment of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
