Title of the PhD project:
Synthesis and Solid State NMR Characterization of Novel Ionic Conductive Polymeric Membranes
Abstract of the PhD project:
Ionic conductive polymeric membranes play a central role in the research of new energy production and storage systems. These materials are composed by polymers that allow the selective flow of certain ions while acting as an electric insulator.
Membranes can be designed to selectively transfer either cations, generally protons, or anions and are accordingly defined as cation exchange membranes (CEMs) or anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Ion conducting membranes must work in environments with harsh pH values and high temperatures without decomposing or altering their mechanical and conductive properties. To reach such characteristics, different polymeric materials and different functionalization processes must be explored. Moreover, a complete and accurate characterization of the product must be carried out with different techniques. Among them, Solid State NMR has been widely used on polymeric materials to characterize their structural properties and local dynamics and to relate macroscopic properties to their molecular origin.
The aim of this project is to synthesize and characterize novel ion exchange membranes based on different polymeric materials which could meet all requirements needed for the application in the field of energy production and storage. A substantial part of the characterization will be performed with Solid State NMR in order to understand which molecular properties of the material have an influence on its macroscopic characteristics.
