Title of the PhD project
Chemical upcycling of wastes for the synthesis of application-tailored amides

Abstract of the PhD project
Plastic waste accumulation is a critical environmental challenge all over the world. At the same time, the greenhouse effect caused by excessive carbon dioxide emissions is becoming increasingly prominent. As a result, chemical upcycling through depolymerization offers an alternative, sustainable approach to transform waste polymers into high value-added products, such as the CO2 sorbent.
The project is to utilize amides derived from the depolymerization of plastic waste, such as PET and nylon. Then a liquid can be obtained from these amides (in the form of a Deep Eutectic Solvent, DES, or a Low Transition Temperature Mixture, LTTM) and act as stable and reusable liquid CO2 sorbent, followed by characterization and absorption capacity improvement. In addition, DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations will be employed to model reaction energetics and predict the most favorable reaction pathways. By tailoring amide structures for specific applications, such as CO2 absorption and other industrial uses, this project aims to contribute to both waste valorisation and circular economy target.
