Title of the PhD project
Conversion of fish biomass into bioadhesives

Abstract of the PhD project
Each year, fish processing generates approximately 20 million tonnes of waste, whose disposal at sea causes severe pollution and ecosystem imbalances. For this reason, more sustainable management of fishery by-products is required, involving the extraction of valuable compounds for the synthesis of higher value-added bioproducts. This PhD project is carried out in collaboration with Bolton Food and is part of a broader European project entitled One Earth. The study is framed within this context, as it focuses on the valorisation of fish processing waste through the synthesis of bio-based adhesives. In particular, the derivatized fractions of polyunsaturated fatty acids, collagen fraction and fish soluble derived peptides from fish biomass, will be characterized in terms of physicochemical characteristics. A re-evaluation of feasibility will be performed and compared with key findings in literature. The identified most promising molecules for adhesives properties and technological feasibility will be selected for the bioadhesive formulations. In this way, the project aims to support the transition from a linear to a circular economic model, fostering the development of the blue economy while simultaneously reducing environmental impact.
