Title of the PhD project:
Biosensor for the detection of pathogens and the assessment of water quality

Abstract of the PhD project:
Water resources contaminated with pathogens are a vector for the propagation and transmission of diseases which represent the most common causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, mostly in developing countries. The main approaches for quality assessment of water intended for human consumption include traditional microbiological evaluation, but these techniques require highly skilled personnel and expensive reagents and instrumentation, while other faster methods do not identify the nature of the pathogenic microorganism. To intervene in this scenario, the aim of this project is to develop a low cost portable electrochemical biosensor for the rapid detection of microorganism associated to fecal contamination of water sources, that can be used on site by unqualified personnel. The biosensor, fabricated by inkjet printing, will identify the pathogen by means of the recent and innovative CRISPR-Cas technology, based on the use of a programmable enzyme for the recognition of nucleic acids of different bacterial species and/or viruses.
