bonaldi biomass conferenceBetween 24 and 27 June, the 32nd European Biomass Conference & Exhibition - EUBCE - occurred in Marseille. Over the years, EUBCE has established itself as an international event, attracting numerous participants from around the world and featuring high-profile guests. The event primarily focuses on all aspects of biomass, including resources, research, innovation, applications, and policies.

Particular emphasis is placed on the exhibition to foster close collaboration between universities, research institutes, and industry. This year, the conference saw the participation of over 3,500 attendees, with approximately 200 oral presentations and at least 500 posters categorised by topic.
During the event, Dr. Lorenzo Bonaldi, a Ph.D. student in Chemical and Materials Sciences, received the “Best Poster Award” in the category “Sustainable Resources for Decarbonising the Economy” for his poster titled: “A novel and valuable strategy for sustainable energy production through the gasification of pulp and paper mill sludge.” The presented work, carried out under the supervision of Professor Anna Maria Raspolli Galletti and in collaboration with Professor Stefano Frigo from the Department of Energy Engineering (DESTEC), focused on using the gasification process as a method to valorise paper mill waste for energy recovery, in line with the principles of the circular economy. Therefore, the study concentrated on using a mixture of oxygen and steam as gasifying agents to produce hydrogen-rich syngas, ideal for energy production, starting from waste material.
The research was conducted and founded by NEST “Network 4 Energy Sustainable Transition” (code PE0000021) funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), Mission 4 Component 2 Investment 1.3–Call for tender No. 1561 of 11.10.2022 of MUR, funded by the European Union—NextGenerationEU.
The award was presented by the examination committee composed of: Prof. Dimitrios Sidiras (University of Piraeus), Nicolae Scarlat (European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Directorate for Energy, Transport and Climate), David Baxter (former European Commission, Joint Research Centre), and Guillaume Boissonnet (Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives, DES/I-TÉSÉ).
Congratulations to Lorenzo for this achievement!
