Title of the PhD project:
Synthesis of new Pt-Au heteronuclear metal complexes and study of their possible antitumoral activity

Abstract of the PhD project:
The mechanism of action of cisplatin is different from that of the antiarthritic drug auranofin. The gold complex and its derivatives are known to inhibit thioredoxin reductase and bind to proteins, while cisplatin and its derivatives are known to interact with nucleic acids. Starting from these differences, a new strategy based on heteronuclear metal complexes with different active ingredients was very recently born to enlighten any possible synergistic effect in administering them as a single drug rather than as separated molecules. My project aims at the synthesis and characterization of new Pt-Au heteronuclear metal complexes starting from the oxidation of platinum complexes (cisplatin or its derivatives) and the introduction of a gold complex (auranofin or gold NHC complexes) as axial ligand. Then, their interaction with biomolecules will be studied by using different spectroscopic, biological and biochemical techniques.
