Title of the PhD project
Design, Synthesis, and Multiscale Characterization of Mechanochromic Polymers: Experimental and Computational Analyses
Abstract of the PhD project
The MaMa project focuses on developing integrated computational methods to describe and design new mechanochromic materials. Its primary goal is to rationally create technologically advanced commodity polymers that exhibit smart and intelligent features, such as mechano-responsive elastomeric, thermoplastic, and thermoset polymers. This will be achieved by incorporating chromogenic species into the polymer matrix in the form of mechanophore. The interactions that dictate the opto-mechanical behaviour of these chromophores within the polymer matrix, and thus the colour perceived at a macroscopic level, can be adjusted through the application of external forces. Controlling these interactions through careful design of the chromophores and polymers will be essential, as will predicting their behaviour using theoretical tools. My role in this project regards the experimental part, so the validation of the approaches developed in silico through the synthesis and characterization of the most promising candidates. Secondary, I will be developing new mechanochromic systems following different approaches.
