Title:
Physical-chemical characterization of the curing process of oils used in modern paints

Abstract:
Starting from industrial age, despite the introduction of synthetic binders, oil paint has been confirmed as the most appreciate media by the artists. Nowadays, the lack of knowledge about the nature of the changing in paint formulations is a matter of investigation. In the last few years, the evidence of new degradation phenomena has leaded scientists to study the causes. Especially when traditional cleaning systems, based on water, has been no longer suitable. The degradation and water sensitivity are complex occurrences due to different factors, but it is clear that the starting composition of paints formulations combine with environmental condition play a crucial role. The project aims to study the physical-chemical processes that occur during curing of modern oil paint. Particularly, we want to find a successful analytical approach to study the polymerized network formed upon curing in order to differentiate the role played by the components typically mixed to oils into industrial paints (e.g pigments and additives).
